If I lived alone, that would be easy. Happily I don’t live alone. I have a husband and my youngest son, he’s 24, that live with me. I cannot limit them on the foods they want simply because a certain food is making me fat.
Is it only one food or is it a group of foods that you seem to be able to avoid for awhile, but then all the sudden you eat every bite there is of it in the house.
My single food that I rarely buy because I will do that is corn chips. When I do buy them, I buy a large bag and it may take me 3 days to eat every last one. I will even hide the bag so no one else can find them. My other foods that I love cheating with are potato chips and ice cream. I won’t eat every last bite in my house of those two items but I will cheat.
I try to limit myself to only cheating on the weekend but lately, I have been adding chips to my lunch again. So far, I have been lucky. I even loss some more weight and I am not sure how. I have to keep focused on getting through the holidays without gaining weight. So far so good. I had gained a few pounds but have now taken them off.
Many say don’t weigh yourself everyday. I say you should. If I only weighed once a week, then I would have no idea of how I am doing and if I need to work a little harder or take that cheat day I skipped.
When you have a food in your house that you have a hard time turning down, try keeping it out of sight first. If that doesn’t work, then write your menu for the day the night before and stick to it. When things have really gotten bad for me and I definitely should not be eating a certain food, I just throw it away. Or give it to my grand-kids to eat. It’s not wasteful throwing it away since me eating it isn’t really any different. It would all go to my waist and buttocks so why not just throw it away.
If you really have an urge for the corn chips or a certain type of chips, just buy one small bag. Then you can eat them and finish every last crumb. You will continue to feel good about yourself as you were very disciplined in what you did.
So what is the food that just drives you crazy and you have to have it?
How are you going to avoid over eating it?
If you must buy it, have a plan.
The holidays are here and we are going to be eating lots of corn chips, potato chips, ice cream, donuts, cake and pies. Be prepared, and you will get through the holidays. When New Years Eve arrives, you won’t need to say. “I resolve to lose weight this year”. You will already be there and everyone will know it when they see how stunning you look in your outfit or suit.
That is my goal.Tags: potato chip, foods, food, corn chips, new years eve, potato chips, ice cream
As I have said many times, don’t plan on burning off that fat fast. Burning fat too fast will only mess up your metabolism. Your body will sense a large cut back on calories and start hoarding them instead of letting them burn off causing you to possibly gain even more weight. To prevent your body from going into the starvation mode, slowly cut back on calories a little each week.
If your body is use to a 3000 or so calorie intake a day, cutting it to 1500 a day would be a shock. You may burn fat but maybe for only the first couple of weeks. Then you are back to being unable to shed any more pounds without cutting even more calories from your diet. If you are only at this time eating 1500 calories a day, you aren’t eating much. Cutting more calories from your diet is really going to deprive you of eating much of anything.
As we all know, we want what we want and sometimes don’t care what the cost is. So you decide to cut another 300 calories a day off your daily intake. Now you are at 1200 calories a day. You also may be able to jump start losing weight again by doing the short starvation diet I have mentioned before. With this diet you go 16 hours after you last eat before you can eat again. You may have to add some good workouts or a fast paced walk to your daily routine too. For all this starving and sweat, you may start to burn fat a bit again, but it also stalls after a few weeks.
Unless you only wanted to burn fat off just a little, you are again stuck with the scale reading the same weight again and it’s too much. Your metabolism has slowed down. You will be lucky to burn fat at this point as your body is fighting against you. Your body is trying to survive what it sees as a famine. You also lack energy. Food is what gives you energy to do those workouts and other things you need to do around the house. Now it seems you just feel sluggish and tired all the time.
All of this is why I preach lose weight slowly. Don’t risk your metabolism slowing down. You want that energy because energy burns fat. If you want to count calories, cut back on some of your high calorie foods or carbohydrates. Don’t cut any food group out of your diet. Our bodies need something from all food groups to balance our diet and stay healthy.
A big thing is, don’t wait until you are starved to eat. An example of waiting too long is what I just did. I was so hungry, I ate a hot dog on a bun and potato chips instead of mixing up some of my tuna I love or making a salad for lunch. Potato chips are a rare item for me to indulge in. Waiting until you are really hungry makes you pick quick food choices, grab snacks or just simply over eat. A good thing to do is make your tuna or salad early when you are not hungry so that once you are, it’s there and ready. Same thing for eating grapefruit or other fruits you need to prepare. If they are cut up and ready to eat, you will grab them when hungry instead of a high calorie cookie.
The point is, plan on burning fat off slowly. It may take longer, but it will also stay off better too. Don’t risk lowering your metabolism by trying to burn fat off to quick. It’s also good to add some cardio to your routine such as a brisk walk. It may take longer to burn off the fat but it will also stay off longer.Tags: quick food choices, burn fat slowly, high calorie cookie, food group
This is the season of parties for our family. My oldest daughter and her husband always throw big parties for their children as they grow a year older. We just added another birthday to the season. On October 4th, our daughter gave birth to a little boy. His birth actually prevented the birthday celebration of her oldest daughter from happening. Zachary was actually almost a month early. I foresee Hannah’s birthday never being quite the same again. Her birthday is on the 6th.
With all these parties comes pizza, cake and ice cream along with all the snacks. It’s really hard not to snack on all those goodies, especially when we are all sitting together in the family room. Watching others eat what I love to eat too is difficult.
We would have been having cake and vanilla pudding tonight for my 24 year old sons birthday, but he chose not to have it. I think I will instead make up some pudding parfaits just so we don’t totally not celebrate. The parfaits will be made with low fat milk so they aren’t all that bad. The whip topping isn’t a low fat one. I found the low fat foods actually add high fructose corn syrup which is terrible for us to consume. While no sweeteners are absolutely great for us, I would rather use real sugar and suffer less side effects than the substitutes.
I have also found that I am happy with just a small serving of dessert. I use to take the larger servings and was taught to always clean off my plate. Then even though I had eaten enough of the item, I still finished the serving to not waste. So much for burning fat. It did not happen.
Now Hannah’s party will be this next Saturday. Needless to say, only being 8 years of age, missing her special party of the year did not go over very well. Since I know that I am going to want to eat the pizza, chips, dip, ice cream and cake on Saturday, I have decided to take it easy on eating much that will not burn fat this week.
Right now as I am writing this blog article, I am eating a tuna fish sandwich with tomato and lettuce on it. I mixed my tuna with mayonnaise, which I am sorry to say I read it has high fructose corn syrup in it and it’s not even the light type. I use wheat bread, which now isn’t suppose to be all that great either, but better than crackers or potato chips. Without the bread, I would have eaten either the chips or crackers. Hopefully the tomato and the lettuce help balance out some of the bad in the sandwich. No matter what, I just ate some omega 3 which is good for my bones, my eyes, my heart and my brain. It was a good choice.
At night, I eat dinner and later my low fat yogurt. Low fat milk products generally aren’t loaded with sugar to make it taste better but I am not reading the label. My husband picks out our yogurt.
If I do good all week, then I can have my splurge day on Saturday. That sounds like a good fat burning plan to me. I will burn fat all day Sunday after enjoying a great day of not worrying about my diet on Saturday. I may even get some exercise to burn fat Saturday by jumping on their trampoline.Tags: fat burning plan, old sons birthday, tuna fish sandwich, dieting while others are partying, low fat yogurt, fat milk products
If you have been following my blog, you know I would never push that type of hype on you. Reading post like that on the internet usually only leads to you needing to spend some money to buy a product. With my blogs, you are required to purchase nothing to lose fat. If you want to, that is fine, but it is not needed. I will tell you for free whatever it is I have learned to make it easier to burn fat.
Never believe the advertisements that say no changes in lifestyle or diet needed. You can sit on the couch, eat what you want to eat and pop this pill or drink this drink to lose those excess pounds. If you buy the product, your pocket may be lighter but not your body. Not unless your wallet was so full it was weighing you down.
Have you heard of omega 3? The essential fatty acids our bodies need to stay healthy? They are also good for helping you burn fat. Flaxseeds are full of omega 3. They are also a good fiber addition to your diet. Now I am not saying that if you add flaxseeds to your diet that you will absolutely lose weight, but it can help. Along with helping you to burn fat, it can help you keep healthy in so many other ways. Check out my other blogs on omega 3 for more information that may interest you.
If you choose to use flaxseeds as an additive to your diet, you may find that you feel full faster. Flaxseeds work great on salads, or just sprinkled on your cereal for breakfast. Not fond of flaxseeds, there is as usual, a gel tab you can take 3 times a day which will give you the full benefits of flaxseed. Flaxseeds are reasonably priced, not like a lot of those high cost diet mixtures. I actually buy one bottle and get another one free at the store. Flaxseeds are low in calories and can make a nice snack if you simply enjoy eating them.
Another source of omega 3 that can help you lose weight is chia seeds. They can also be used just like flaxseeds in your cereal, salads, or other foods you can add them too. They contain protein, calcium and again fiber. The two work very well together and also give you the benefits of omega 3.
Don’t fall for snack bars that say they are good for weight loss because they contain flaxseeds or chia or both. These so called diet bars are a reason some people are gaining weight. They pack so much hidden sugars into the snack bars that there is no way they are going to help you burn fat. I’ve mentioned it before, beware of high fructose corn syrup. There are other names for high fructose corn syrup to try and confuse us. It also seems the more you eat food containing high fructose corn syrup, the more you want to eat. I don’t believe there is really any true snack bar that taste good that is good for you.
My best snack for me when I want something sweet is to have a bag of grapes on a shelf in my fridge that I see every time I open my refrigerator. I have already washed them so all I need to do is grab a handful. The more natural foods you eat the better for you to burn fat.
So if a diet advertises that you can burn fat off equaling more than a few pounds a week, look into it a bit deeper. If you decide to try it, be ready to dig deep into your pockets. Or you can simply try some of the ideas I give you weekly in my blog for free.Tags: high fructose corn, fatty acid, essential fatty acid, fructose corn syrup, true snack bar
Winter is coming soon. Along with the cold weather we are bombarded with birthday parties and holidays. I know it is going to be more difficult for me to continue to stay on my diet through the holidays. I do have to be realistic.
Before the holidays get here, I am working on burning fat again. I have been maintaining my weight for awhile now. It’s not going up or down. Sometimes that scares me a little. If I party a bit too much, that scale is going to go up for sure. I don’t want to say, oh well. I’ll have a good time for the next few months and then make a new New Years Resolution to burn fat, lose weight again. Wouldn’t it be nice to not make that resolution this year?
I decided to help jump start my system to getting back to burning fat again. I am doing the short 16 hour fast again. The most I go it 18 hours without eating. A lot of times how long I fast depends on how hungry I get. I won’t make myself sick by waiting too long. One big thing about doing this is, when I get that late night craving for something sweet, I remind myself how long I will have to wait before I can eat again. Maybe I have already gone 4 of the 16 hours. Do I really want to start all over? If I was really hungry, that would be different, but most of the time it’s because I see my husband eating things all night long. My last snack of the night is usually a light yogurt. I eat that at about 8pm. Then I try and wait until 2pm the next day before eating again. Today I didn’t make it. I ate at noon.
Fasting, as long as it’s short fast, is not going to hurt your health. A lot of people actually do it without thinking about it. On the weekends when we don’t get up early for work, I find that the first 12 hours has usually passed by before I even get out of bed. That only gives me at the most, 6 hours to go. I can still drink my coffee. I do put in some milk and sweetener. The coffee helps me fight off the hunger pains a bit too. I do give in to my hunger before giving my self a headache. We all know our bodies and how long we can go before eating.
The good thing about doing the fast is, I will still be doing it all holiday season. When someone asks me if I want cake, I will stop and think about it first. If it falls in the time I am allowed to eat, then I will eat some, but a smaller piece than I would really like. I have found it’s not that you really want the large slice of cake, you only need a few bites to satisfy you. If you don’t eat it at all, then you feel deprived and that’s not good. We are suppose to reward ourselves, but not over do it.
Then again, maybe your birthday party will fall on your splurge day. Do continue to have splurge days. Just remember, the next day, if your house is full of left overs, you need to either diet or be fasting again. If you do as you should, your metabolism will be in first gear and you will burn fat like crazy.
Good luck with the holidays. If all else fails, well, New Years will come again and there are resolutions to be made.Tags: hunger pains, lose weight, i have started fasting again, new years resolution, late night craving, light yogurt
It’s Wednesday or many people call the hump day. Come tomorrow we are closing in on the weekend. If you are like most of us, our weekends are very different from our weekdays. I for one do not actually diet on the weekend. I have talked many times about doing a splurge day. How if you over eat one day, then diet the next how your metabolism will be higher the day after a splurge burning more fat the entire day. I have chosen to use my splurge day on the weekend. Most of the time I use it on Saturday. We typically do our grocery shopping and eat out on Saturday. That makes it a perfect day to splurge.
Sometimes it’s hard to stay on a diet to burn fat all week. That is why when Wednesday comes around, it gets a little exciting. I have made it through 3 complete days of burning fat and only have 3 more to go. Having a splurge day really makes it easier for me to get through those days when I really want something. I always tell myself, just wait, when Saturday gets here you can eat anything you want.
The funny thing about my splurge day is, I really don’t splurge. You go ahead and splurge and enjoy it, but I have retrained my thinking so much as to how I should eat that I don’t over do it even on my splurge day. I will usually have a snack while we watch a movie, treat myself a bit with some popcorn or apple pie and ice cream. I may even eat some corn chips and dip. Once Saturday gets here, and I know I can eat anything I want, I don’t really want it. The big thing is on Saturday and lots of times on Sunday too, I don’t tell myself I cannot have it.
Even though my splurge day isn’t a big splurge, it helps me get through the days when I am not splurging. Just having a day that you can eat that ice cream, chips, cake, or other treats helps you get through the other days you are dieting.
Without a splurge day, you would feel very deprived. Never allowed to eat something off your diet. The bad thing about that is, you tend to simply sneak the foods you are not allowed and maybe more often than you would if you allowed yourself a splurge day. Plus, you may not splurge enough to raise your metabolism the next day letting all that fat and calories you ate just turn to fat.
If you pick out the weekend as your time to splurge, then today is your hump day and you are half way there. If you work a schedule that doesn’t give you weekends off, then you may arrange your off day to be your splurge day. Then your hump day would fall on a different day.
It doesn’t matter when you schedule your splurge day, it’s only important that you do. Give yourself goals and a time for treats too. You may find this time you will stay on your diet to burn fat and it does.Tags: mid week diet willpower, bad thing, big thing, ice cream, hump day
Here we go again, the end of another week. It Has been a rather frustrating week for me. At least I did not turn to the bag of potato chips while I was stressed out. I use to do that a lot. When ever I would get anxious about something, I would reach for the chips or cookies. Sometimes ice cream worked too.
Do you eat when you are stressed or nervous about something?
One of the biggest reasons for people to gain weight, not lose it is they get stressed over things in every day life. Most of us get stressed out or nervous about something pretty much daily. Think of all those added calories that you just added to your diet for the day. It would most likely take 2 hours of aerobic activity to burn off all those calories that will be turning to fat.
How do you avoid eating when stressed?
This week, my house is very clean. I was so stressed I felt like I had drank 10 cups of caffeinated coffee. I scrubbed floors, dusted, wiped down walls, doorways, did laundry and dishes all in record time. I am still buzzing a bit and it’s days later. Maybe stress can be a high too. It did something to me. I quit eating when I am stressed and have turned to doing another activity.
I remember once when a neighbor had stressed me out so bad, called me horrible names, and I had to do something to work off that stress. My stress that time also contained anger. I am not a person to retaliate and call names back or do things to get back at others. Since I had a large pile of shingles we had removed from roof with nails, tar and wood stuck to them that had to be pulled off before putting in garbage, I attacked the pile. When hubby came home later, the big stack of work was done. He was amazed. Once he heard why I was upset, stressed and did all that work, well, he went and talked to neighbor. Thank goodness she has since moved away.
We all need to find a better way to deal with stress or anger. Seems anger also turns into eating binges. There is always something else we can do to use up that burst of energy that comes with anger.
Other things I like to do when stressed is taking long walks, sometimes I run as things go through my mind that upset me further. I use to get on my exercise bike until I broke the pedals that turned the wheel on the bike. Lifting weights or even dancing can all be ways of working through your stress.
Stop next time you are reaching for those chips. Maybe there is another way to get through your stress. Just think, instead of adding calories to your day, you may end up burning many off. You will feel better about yourself and not as bloated as a bag of chips may make you feel. If you must eat, maybe eat grapes or something healthy for you. Be sure to work out your stress. Don’t keep it inside. That isn’t healthy either. I hope these ideas help you fight the urge to eat when stressed.Tags: large pile, potato chips, eating binges, horrible names, long walks, stress
It’s been 7 months now since most of us made a resolution on New Years Day to lose weight. How many of you kept that resolution. I truly think that if you are still reading this blog that you kept it.
If you are like me, you kept your New Years Resolution to lose weight but change it around a bit every now and then. In fact, it has been said that if you give your body the exact same food daily, instead of losing weight, you gain.
I have learned a lot the past 7 months. I am still losing weight but at a slow pace. Since I started dieting in January, I have lost 15 to 17 pounds. I am moving slow with it, but I have learned how to eat to keep it off and to keep on burning.
Do I cheat? “Yes, I do.”
What is a diet if you don’t cheat and since I have been studying up on dieting, I have found you need to cheat. Now I really don’t feel so bad. Cheating one day a week will help you lose weight by giving you more energy the next day after your cheat if you make sure to return to your old diet for a few days. You metabolism will burn more fat a day after over indulging. I make sure I practice that. I have a sweet tooth that needs sweets occasionally.
People don’t overly notice I have lost weight, but I know it. When I pull clothes out of my drawer that I haven’t felt comfortable in for a couple of years, I feel really good wearing them. Especially if it’s shorts that I have to wear a belt with to keep them on right.
This is the first time I have kept my resolution of losing weight and I am happy. I am still dieting but that doesn’t make me unhappy. I am happy because I am seeing results and I still eat a lot of the foods I love. I haven’t cut out carbohydrates, cheese or meat products. I just eat sensibly.
Another thing I have done for my diet is eat more salads and fresh fruits. If I eat my loved chicken tenders, I eat a salad before eating them. Instead of fries, I eat a baked potato with sour cream only. In fact, I get extra sour cream. The fat in the sour cream isn’t bad for you. The fat in the butter is very bad and leads to tummy fat. In the evenings, my husband and I both like to let a low fat yogurt. Not the Greek type, haven’t gotten into that one. The yogurt makes me feel like I have had a dessert. If I still want something else, I eat grapefruit or grapes with some Colby cheese.
I try to keep a lot of foods around that are yes foods. Having too many “no” food around just makes me want them. Cookies are a big “no” food. With having grandchildren around a lot, I do give them cookies. When I give them a couple, lots of times I eat one. That is all I will allow myself. Cookies contain the fat that isn’t good for you and will cause you body to start gaining weight..
We had a birthday this past weekend. I ate a brownie with ice cream on it. I didn’t gain weight. It didn’t go to my hips as many like to say.
Find a diet that works for you. This one works for me and I may be on it the rest of my life. I am enjoying it.Tags: new years day, sour cream, new years resolution, what are you doing to lose weight
Losing weight, burning fat off is really no big mystery. Who doesn’t know how to lose weight?
You may be surprised at the answers you get if you ask people how to burn fat or lose weight. Some think you have to do hours of cardio every day to burn off enough calories to lose weight. You will burn fat doing all that cardio, but you won’t have much of a life. Do you really want to spend your entire life in a gym lifting weights and running on a treadmill?
Other people will tell you it’s eliminating carbohydrates, or cutting out sugar. Some try eating only vegetables. I call it rabbit food. Sitting down to a raw carrot, a salad and maybe some broccoli for dinner does not hit my fancy. Sounds boring and not something I want to do.
Do you know there is really nothing to help you lose weight other than eating right.
What is eating right?
Eating right is following the food pyramid. Eating from all the different food groups but not overdoing one food group because you like the items in it. Also not avoiding a food group because of it’s fat content or high calories. If you follow the recommended amounts of the different groups on the pyramid, you will feel better and keep your weight in a reasonable range.
Does this mean I can never eat more of one food group than is recommended. Will I gain weight if I do?
Everyone over indulges from time to time. There isn’t anything wrong with occasionally taking an extra portion. The only time this becomes bad is when it becomes a habit and you are eating more on a regular basis. It’s good to occasionally over eat, it raises our metabolism which actually burns more fat and calories. After eating a high calorie day eat a little less the next day to enable your raised metabolism to burn fat you have been trying to burn off. If you continue to over eat, your metabolism will only burn the calories you continue to eat and not your stored fat.
As adults, we have no one to tell us to push away from the table, or that bowl of dessert is way too much. We tend to take larger servings than we need and our body fat is going up for it.
As I said, weight loss is no mystery. We have been taught the basic facts since we started kindergarten and were taught what makes up a nutritious meal. The world promotes fast food, junk food and puts things in food to get us to want to eat more of it. To lose weight, look back on what your parents and teachers taught you. It is still the right way to eat and the way to stay slim. Then after figuring out the right foods to eat, watch out for your portion sizes. Do reward yourself occasionally but not all the time. You really don’t need dessert every night.
Eating right should help you burn fat and lose weight until you reach the right weight for you.Tags: weight loss, calories to lose weight, losing weight, food group, gym lifting weights
I am a big supporter of the Mediterranean diet. I have been studying it for the past 4 years learning how it can benefit us as a way of losing weight. It not only helps us to lose weight but to keep it off better than a lot of other diet plans. The Mediterranean diet is not only a diet plan but a way of eating for life too.
People living in the Mediterranean area seem to live longer than people in the United States and they are healthier too.
Imagine this, eating tasty meals with family and friends, having a little wine with your dinner, and living longer healthier lives.
The Mediterranean diet is made up of foods we all recognize. Many of the foods we already eat. A big portion of the lean meat people living in the Mediterranean area eat is fish. Eating cold water oily fish at least 2 times a week will help you stay healthier than someone that doesn’t. Along with fish they eat, nuts, fresh fruit, chicken, turkey, cheese, eggs, they enjoy their vegetables, beans, whole grains and olive oil. Now I will tell you what the Mediterranean diet consist of that is so good for us. It’s omega 3.
Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid and it is found in the cold water oily fish that the people in the Mediterranean area are eating. It is also in the nuts, many leafy vegetables, virgin olive oil and if a chicken or a turkey is raised organically, omega 3 is in it to. Along with the eggs of the chicken is raised organically.
A diet of omega 3 will help you lose weight and amazingly, it will help you keep it off. It’s actually a well balanced diet. The only thing you need to watch out for is over eating. Portions are important. You will find that in any diet plan you follow, if you overeat, you will not lose weight. You will gain.
Getting enough omega 3 in your diet can also cut your risk of getting cancer, having a heart attack, developing Alzheimer’s or many other diseases as you get older.
Even though you are eating a nutritious diet, you do still need to get some kind of exercise. Just a half hour walk after supper would be great. After walking that half hour, your system would be busy burning far more calories for quite a while longer than if you just left the dinner table and relaxed in front of the television the rest of the night. It also is a good time for you and your special person in your life to have some moments away from others and be able to chat. It’s so hard these days with the televisions blaring, the family demands and the phone calls that follow you wherever you go, to have time to just chat. I love this special time I have with my husband.
There are many ways to lose weight. The Mediterranean Diet is just one of many. Choosing a plan that you can adapt to and make it a way of life, not just a month diet is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. Choosing a diet plan that is good for your heart is a big plus.
Taking the first step is the hardest. After that it becomes a habit.Tags: omega 3, mediterranean diet, eating the mediterranean diet, lean meat people, essential fatty acid, diet, virgin olive oil
